I have long believed that women who overeat or binge or otherwise abuse their bodies with food are deprived on many levels.
Some of these core issues of deprivation go way way back, to either inadequate or insensitive or even traumatic parenting. But that’s a bit deeper than what I want to share with you today. Those are early wounds that can be tended with a loving mentor and that’s essential to a full life much of the time.
Just as essential for healing overeating is overcoming a different sense of deprivation, and it’s pervasive in our culture, not just among those with eating issues. We tend to be a pleasure-deprived culture. We don’t know how to truly SAVOR anything. We are rushing to be more efficient, to get things done, to acquire more, to move through things as quickly as we can.
Learning to savor life through our God-given senses is a way to recover pleasure and therefore fill up the holes in the places where that deprivational longing, that sense of “not-enough” lives.
This is really good medicine! The very best way to fill yourself up in ways that feel good.
You may favor certain senses more than others. Maybe you pay alot of attention to taste, but not as much to your visual sense. Or maybe you’re really sensitive to noise and sound but don’t fill your environment with much pleasure in the way of olfactory gratification.
Try this:
This week see how many of your senses you can make happier. It will feel really good, I promise.
A few ideas:
Pick the most beautiful deeply colored produce at the market. Really LOOK as you choose.
FInd a bouquet of early hyacinthys for your office or something else that smells like spring to you.
Buy a new spice or herb at the market this week and add it to your cooking or salads.
Find something soft and cozy to wear around your neck, or a lovely shawl to hand on the back of your chair.
Add some lemon or orange zest to a salad to enhance all of the other flavors.
Check out soothing music via i-tunes or elsewhere and enjoy some music while you work or cook dinner or get dressed this week.
Make a beautiful centerpiece of some sort for your kitchen- it could be floral, or even a big bowl of lemons and limes piled up can be really pleasing visually.
You can probably think of more, but I can guaranted you this. Filling up your senses and learning to live in that place of savoring will balance ALL the aspects of your life, plus do wonders for your nervous system. We are build to respond to the natural world- bring it inside and see how good you feel.
I promise you this is worth the effort and any minimal expense.
Let me know how you did or what you tried!
In love and pleasure-
xox
Lisa

I think I totally agree with you. Deprivation made up with eating the feelings.
