Just like the sun comes up and the sun goes down, we are not meant to shine all day without a break.
Even BEFORE you feel depleted, or are down to the wire, or find yourself mindlessly putting things in your mouth , or unable to focus on anything… even before any of that starts to happen, it’s a very very good thing to take time to rest.
I know way too many women, entrepreneurs especially, who literally never take a day off.. and I have been caught in this cycle many times but have been committed more and more to taking full days off and it makes a huge difference in resetting my wellbeing, my sparkle, my optimism, and overall happiness and ability to be happier and more present and give more to those I love and care about (including myself).
But there are ways to rest and refill. You won’t need to lie on the couch like a tired little zombie watching reruns if you rest and refill on a regular basis, before you are totally fried.
Think of nature.. think of cycles. So if you’re working all the time, rest for you would simply be to not work and take time to see a friend, take a nap, go out someplace to gather inspiration and see beautiful things and just be away from work-things. Julia Cameron in her book “The ARtist’s Way” (one of my top 5 favorite sources for inspiration and wisdom) calls them “Artist’s Dates” when you take yourself someplace weekly to mine inspiration- could be anywhere that fills you up. For me that is anywhere that I can find beauty- my favorite nurseries, my favorite greengrocer (I think vegetables are beautiful when they are all stacked and massed together) and farmer’s markets, the orchard next door, my hills walking route in my town, my favorite boutique where I can touch things and smell things… you get the gist.
Rest can be active as in filling up your senses with pleasure and inspiration or seeing friends, as in just taking a time-out from the usual and whatever has started to drain you. For me rest the other night was getting out of my men-filled home and going to an all-women networking event via Ladies Who Launch.
Rest can be more quiet and restful, as in quiet time- but it needs to be a change from what you’re already doing that’s draining you.
Nature teaches us about the beauty and necessity of cycles and rhythms.
I am sitting by the fire, still nursing my first cup of tea (for 4 hours now… gave up coffee a few months ago and am still not in love with tea in the same way..) and it’s so rainy out that rest seemed like the word for the day.
Find a peaceful way to refill yourself today.
I want that for you too.
Sending you Love and Every Blessing-
xox
