Some of the women I’ve worked with get a little panicky this time of year and maybe you’re feeling it too..
Maybe you hoped you’d have mastered some of the things you’ve tried to change your eating or to lose weight, or you may be looking around right now.
This is the time of year when those cleansing programs and detoxes and weight-loss books score big time.. warmer weather is here and a familiar seasonal anxiety begins to show up for so many women.
If you’ve found yourself in that place again..honestly, I know how you feel. I went through that seasonal distress more times than you might believe.. and with every year hated myself more for not having figured it out. For being in the same damn place.
The mix of anxiety, shame, guilt and absence of any kind of self-compassion.. in and of itself is pretty toxic, pretty painful.
But the other piece is that you really don’t know how to get there..really don’t know how to lose weight, stop emotional overeating. The longer it goes on, the worse you feel.
For the most part nothing has worked.. or you haven’t been able to sustain it. And every big bad belief about yourself starts to swirl which of course leads to more shame, more punishing self-talk, which pretty much always leads to the kind of eating that you’re trying to end anyways.
It just doesn’t work this way.. I promise you and if I could come over to your house and beg you to stop trying to put the cart before the proverbial horse.. I honestly would. I know this terrain and kind of suffering. And how to get out. It really doesn’t happen the way you might think.
When something or anything isn’t working.. it’s time to change course.
Self-hate doesn’t work. Restricting calories, focusing on the scale, punishing exercise regimes, the latest diet book.. doesn’t and still won’t work.
And, you can’t change your mindset as easily as one would think. Our brains and thoughts are pretty hardwired, they want to go to fear, they want to think the worst, they get patterned pretty powerfully, and they don’t love change. Damn.
Here’s what I know.. you have to reprogram your neural pathways.. gently but consistently. You have to calm and balance your nervous system.. again.. with consistency. You have to find a way of eating that is all yours, that you like, can live with, that doesn’t trigger the terror of deprivation from diets-past. And …one of the most important pieces.. you have to find a way to navigate relationships that don’t upset the balance of your energy-sensitive nature. You feel things. Deeply.
You may notice you either spend a lot of time alone.. trying to get balanced or recover from time around people. Or you get tangled up in complicated relationship dynamics.. take everyone’s stuff on, give too much.. try to fix other peoples’ stuff a lot..
This is another piece that will make you eat, overeat, and just keep weight on.. for all sorts of reasons.
If things aren’t working.. if you’ve gone back to Weight Watchers for the millionth time, signed up for yet another strict cleanse or detox, are roaming around looking for the latest diet.. please..stop.
